Sustainable communities

sustainable communities

Sustainable and local energy is playing an increasingly bigger role in the energy market. Communities it is necessary to know how to get environmental the needed energy. KEMA is actively engaged in identifying strategies and approaches to community-level energy efficiency small-scale renewables integration in the built environment

KEMA has simulated an energy efficient community for two European Commission (EC projects) – SORCER and ECOSTILER.

The SORCER (Stimulating Obtaining Results in Communities in relation to Energy-efficiency and Renewables) project is based on stimulation of energy-efficient dwellings with a maximum use of sustainable energy in two communities. Hillerød (DK) and Apeldoorn (NL) are working on very ambitious projects. Cooperation shall increase the impact of the demonstration, an advantage for all stakeholders, and shall strengthen Europe to reduce dependence on energy imports, increase sustainability and stimulate growth and jobs.

The ECOSTILER (Energy efficient community stimulation by use and integration of local energy resources) project is all about a coordinated approach in achieving energy efficient communities. The common and main element is the use of biogas and district heating systems, successful tools in reduction of primary fuel consumption and CO2-reduction. The interesting complementarity’s is the size of the communities, ranging from large to small. KEMA is responsible for the project management of the following demonstration projects.

  • Amsterdam Nieuw West
  • London Southwark - The Aylesbury Estate
  • Måbjerk-Ringkjøbing County
