Energy Efficiency Improvement

KEMA's integrated technical and management expertise assists clients to find optimized solutions for any aspect of plant performance and reliability

Improvement of energy efficiency is a constant issue for the utility industry. Managers of power plants know better than anyone else that the profit of a power production unit depends on optimizing its performance and maximizing its reliability. A production unit has to deliver when the market demands it.Available options for energy efficiency improvement must always be evaluated against the effect on availability and reliability of the unit.

KEMA is an independent consultant with decades of experience in the energy industry. With our integrated technical and management expertise KEMA assists clients to find optimized solutions for any aspect of plant performance and reliability. Our multidisciplinary teams use a collaborative approach which quickly yields tailor-made, practical solutions.

The KEMA approach is based on a number of successive steps to assess the installation and the boundary conditions, to make recommendations for incorporation of improvements as well as to implement training of personnel and to monitor results and plant status afterwards.

KEMA developed special tools for analyzing the operation and performance of power plants or individual units. The process simulator package called SPENCE® can be used for different types of units (Pulverized Coal plant, Combined Cycle, IGCC, etc) in designs for either new units or refurbishment of existing ones. Also operation analysis can be performed based on models enabling What-If analysis of plant performance under different conditions. Other KEMA developments are ThermoWare for condition monitoring and FlameBeat for combustion monitoring of gas turbines.

The KEMA approach and services in the field of energy efficiency improvement is being used to assist clients with for example:

  • technical and economic feasibility studies of different options in either retrofit or new build installations

  • bid evaluation of tenders of manufacturers as owner's representative

  • implementing strategy and procedures within the customer’s organization for long term efficiency improvement, including training of staff and continuous monitoring of performance.
